That Time Of Year Again (Seed Starting!)

February 15, 2014 by Pamela Parker Caird Leave a Comment

Seed catalog

My husband and I had our coffee on the front porch this morning. Rocking in rocking chairs, we plotted what we wanted to get accomplished this weekend (for once, he is taking the weekend off from work). Why is this special? Because the last few weeks have been marked by icy weather, and here’s what today and the next week look like:

Check out Thursday’s high. Ouch! So, here in Central Texas, our thoughts are beginning to turn to seed catalogs and spring plantings, meaning that, even though the day is glorious outside, I’ve spent some time today on the computer plotting out my garden plan, which includes building and filling a new raised bed.

Basically, I’m ditching some of the plants that performed poorly last year (carrots, lettuce) and doubling down on the ones that were productive, though I’m also experimenting with some new varieties. Also will try Swiss Chard and Bok Choy, which I tried to include in a fall garden, but which didn’t do very much. (Translation = they all died in frost.) I think I needed a break, too, and didn’t tend them very well.

Am I ready now? To be honest, probably not, but if I’m going to have a garden I need to get a move-on. In fact, I probably should have started weeks ago. I mean, did you see that 91 degree high in the forecast? Surely it’s a fluke… but I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t.

P.S. Looks like that forecasted 91 degree temp was an error. We’re staying in the 70s & 80s this week.
