Our soil is basically non-existent. One might call it limestone. (Note the ubiquitous rocks.) So, last weekend, we had a batch (2.5 cubic yards!) of garden soil trucked in, anticipating that this will be the foundation of our spring/summer kitchen garden. I know, I know, I’ve talked big about having a garden before. But it’s more complex than it may seem.
Besides the lack-of-soil problem, we’ve also got what one might call a pest problem. To get this really going, we need an 8-foot fence to surround it and a mesh screen to go over the top, so as to keep those pesky deer and birds (not to mention raccoons and opossums) from having their way with the leaves and produce.
For now, since it’s only one bed, we’re planning a set of hoops made of PVC pipe, that we can drape with plastic (when it’s cold) or mesh (when it’s hot, but no pests are allowed!).
What will we plant? I’m thinking carrots, tomatoes, basil, zucchini, cucumber, watermelon, potatoes, scallions and lettuce. And those little tiny shoots you see in the “after” picture… they are sweet potatoes that sprouted in the pantry.
They weren’t in the plan, but I believe in going with the flow.
