ost of the time since we’ve had children, we have lived far from the rest of our extended families, so every possible vacation day was dutifully saved up for trips to visit our loved ones — for the holidays, for special occasions, and just to catch up every once in a while. This has meant that we’ve essentially had no real vacations, though I’m certainly not complaining about that wedding in Tuscany.
Now that our recent move has brought us closer to my family, we can discharge those obligations on weekends and long weekends, so I’ve been daydreaming about taking a real vacation at last.
My idea of the perfect vacation has changed tremendously since my single days. Out for now are the intrepid all-day wanderings through foreign cities, the 8-hour mountain-climbing excursions, and the late-night European discos. At least until the kids are a bit older.
The pre-children Pamela would have scoffed, but my dreams now include some kind of all-inclusive resort or cruise. We’d need activities for the kids as well as adult-oriented fun, and some kind of child care options are a must. Water is essential, as well as some active exploratory possibilities, such as hiking trails, a mountain-biking course or ziplines. At night, I’d love to hire a babysitter, get dressed up — jewelry, makeup, heels, the works — and enjoy some fine dining, tasty wine, and entertainment. My fantasies include a beautifully-designed room, with super-comfy beds, a spacious shower with a luxurious shower head, and maybe a fireplace for chilly nights. Some of the exotic possibilities I’ve been dreaming about are Costa Rica and Belize — places I visited, and loved, before we got married. Closer to home, I’ve fantasized about a week at the Hyatt Lost Pines or Hill Country resorts.
Before we put any of these plans into action, we’ve got a lot of settling in to do, and we’ve already got two weddings on the calendar for the upcoming months. That real vacation will have to wait a little longer. It’s fun to dream, though.
